Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and has numerous benefits for the body, skin, and hair. I encourage my clients to stay hydrated because of the great benefits to their hair.

Why Is Staying Hydrated Important for Hair?

As a hairstylist, I stress to all my clients the importance of staying hydrated for overall health and healthy hair. Our hair is composed of approximately 25% water and is coated in natural oils that keep it hydrated and protected. When we are dehydrated, our bodies prioritize hydration to our vital organs, and our hair can suffer as a result.

Proper hydration helps to nourish hair follicles, promoting healthy growth and preventing hair from becoming dry and brittle. Proper hydration also helps to maintain the natural oils that coat and protect the hair, preventing breakage and split ends.

In a study published in the International Journal of Trichology, researchers found that individuals who drank more water had higher hair density, hair thickness, and hair elasticity. In another study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, researchers found that increased water intake could improve skin hydration, indirectly improving hair hydration.

Tips for Staying Hydrated

Drinking water is the best way to stay hydrated, but there are other creative ways to get more fluids into your diet.

  1. Drink herbal teas or flavored water. If you find plain water boring, try adding some flavor to it. You can infuse water with fresh fruits, such as lemon or cucumber, or drink herbal teas, which also count towards your daily fluid intake.

  2. Eat hydrating foods Fruits and vegetables are naturally high in water content, so eating more can help keep you hydrated. Some examples include watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers, and celery.

  3. Set reminders to drink water. It's easy to forget to drink water, especially when busy. Set reminders on your phone or use a water-tracking app to remind you to drink water throughout the day.

  4. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, whether to work, school, or running errands. Having water readily available can make it easier to stay hydrated.

  5. Drink coconut water. Coconut water is a natural electrolyte-rich beverage that can help to keep you hydrated. It's a great alternative to sugary sports drinks and is low in calories.

Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and especially important for healthy hair. Drinking enough water and incorporating hydrating foods into your diet can help to keep your hair hydrated, preventing it from becoming dry and brittle. Following the tips above, you can stay hydrated and maintain healthy, luscious locks.
